“It sounds like Tellus would be much better equipped to deal with this without any community concerns than doing it in the middle of a highly built-up suburban area.”
David Penberthy from Adelaide’s Radio Fiveaa 1395 Am spoke this morning to our CEO Nate Smith about the Defence plan to establish another indefinite temporary radioactive waste facility for AUKUS, this time at Osborne near Port Adelaide.
As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)’s Angelique Donnellan last month, the first time local residents heard about the plans for a radioactive waste facility in the community was in October when AUKUS legislation passed federal parliament.
“I am not saying this material will cause community health issues if it is stored for years in Port Adelaide. I am saying it definitely won’t if it is buried in the WA desert.”
With community support, underpinned by a native title agreement with the local Marlinyu Ghoorlie people, Tellus’ Sandy Ridge can solve the AUKUS radioactive waste challenge without undermining social licence for this critical project.
Nate Smith: “I am not saying this material will cause community health issues if it is stored for years in Port Adelaide. I am saying it definitely won’t if it is buried in the WA desert.”
