The Chandler facility will be a world first multi-national geological repository, located 120km south of Alice Springs in the Titjikala region.
The proposed 800m deep salt deposit, which is the size of a small city, is one of the safest places on earth to permanently isolate hazardous materials—including those that will be produced as part of Australia’s transition to a green economy.
In October 2023, the project gained the support of the Titjikala Native Title party and the NT Central Land Council.
Chandler will support Australia’s and our strategic partners’ transition to the green economy by providing a safe place for byproducts from mining, energy and industrial processes.
Strategic Partnership for Chandler:
After a global expression of interest (EOI) process announced by Tellus Managing Director and CEO Nate Smith in February 2024, we chose Amentum as our partner for the first phase of the Chandler project.
The EOI attracted strong international interest from six global infrastructure firms and consortiums from Australia, North America and Europe seeking to partner with Tellus in the realisation of Chandler.
Amentum UK has led several national waste repository programmes internationally, including the UK’s Low level Waste Repository, and Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, the only nuclear deep geological repository in the U.S. Amentum has a significant footprint in the Northern Territory and provides support services for projects operated jointly by Australia and the United States.
