Miss America 2023 visits Sandy Ridge

As Australia’s only licensed facility for low-level radioactive waste, Sandy Ridge attracts plenty of interested visitors.

And they could not be more welcome. At Tellus, we love to showcase what we do.

Over the last couple of years, as well as clients and partners, we’ve had the privilege of hosting guests from government and parliament, industry representatives, stakeholder groups like Women in Nuclear (WiN) Australia, and news media.

Earlier this month, we were thrilled to welcome Grace Stanke, nuclear engineer and Miss America 2023, along with her colleagues from Nuclear for Australia for a site tour at Sandy Ridge. During the tour, our guests saw our first waste disposal cell in action, under the white air dome, and were given a sneak peek at our second cell under construction. It will be half as big again as the current cell.

While we welcome all interested guests to Sandy Ridge, some guests attract more interest than others. Grace, AKA Miss America, was accompanied on her visit by a crew from Channel Nine:

As Australia moves forward to a nuclear future through AUKUS, and navigates the ongoing public discussions around nuclear energy, we were proud to demonstrate that solutions to managing low-level radioactive waste already exist.

Remember, the immediate challenge with nuclear reactors, whether on submarines or elsewhere, is not spent fuel, but tonnes of low-level waste.

The challenges are real, but Sandy Ridge is playing its part in creating sustainable solutions.
