Australia’s Offshore Decommissioning Enters a New Era: Insights from the 2026 Mercury Management Report

The March 2026 Marsden Jacob Associates report on mercury management in offshore oil and gas decommissioning, for the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, is a timely read for Australia’s growing decommissioning wave.

The report highlights the challenges of mercury scale and sludge in pipelines and steel infrastructure, and the limited domestic capacity to manage it safely.

At Tellus, our Sandy Ridge facility in Western Australia is one of the very few licensed sites explicitly noted in the report as capable of accepting both solid and liquid mercury-contaminated waste – alongside, hydrocarbons and other co-contaminants. Sandy Ridge is also the only licensed facility in Australia for the safe disposal of NORM (naturally occurring radioactive material).

We provide permanent isolation with zero future liability – supporting Australia, right here in WA.

What are your thoughts on the report’s findings?
