Second energy-from-waste partnership

In an exciting development for Australia’s clean energy future, Tellus has signed on to manage APCr for ACCIONA’s Kwinana Energy Recovery.

Situated in Kwinana, south of Perth, KER will repurpose waste for the generation of electricity. Connected to the Western Power grid last August, the facility will soon come online, producing enough energy to power more than 50,000 homes.

Energy-from-waste plants produce their own hazardous by-product, in the form of Air Pollution Control residue (APCr), which, due to its complex composition, brings unique challenges.

Tellus’ near-surface geological repository at Sandy Ridge, about 240km south-east of Kalgoorlie, is the ideal final destination for APCr.

This is the second energy-from-waste project that Tellus has partnered with. Our partnership with nearby East Rockingham Waste to Energy, also south of Perth, means Tellus can now consider itself the exclusive hazardous material management partner for Australia’s fledgling energy-from-waste industry.

Our capacity to deal with APCr at Sandy Ridge should enable more plants to come online more quickly, and to be accepted by the community, which will benefit from greener energy in the grid.

Tellus CEO Nate Smith said: “We’re excited about the opportunity for Kwinana Energy Recovery to supply renewable low carbon electricity for the residents of Perth, and that we can play a role in enabling this industry to safely start up and scale up.”

“We believe we have the best facility and the best sustainability practices to enable the growth of this important sector. Our capacity to deal with APCr at Sandy Ridge should hopefully mean more plants can come to market much more quickly and be accepted by the community, who’ll benefit from renewable low carbon energy in the grid.”

“With the successful firing of the boilers on gas, Kwinana Energy Recovery is moving closer to the first fire on waste. Therefore, the signing of Tellus’ agreement to accept the APCr from the Energy Recovery process is an important development in the commissioning phase and ultimately commercial operations.”

The clean energy transition is well underway in Australia. The safe and efficient disposal of waste is a key part of that process. Tellus is proud to be playing its role.
