With Australia’s clean energy transition well underway, there are a range of views about the best way to get to ‘net zero’. Regardless of whether it’s solar, wind, battery or nuclear, all these energy technologies generate hazardous materials through their lifecycles requiring safe stewardship. That’s why we’re here.

Australia’s AUKUS-led acquisition of nuclear submarines and recent announcement of a nuclear energy policy by the Federal Coalition has increased public interest in radioactive waste management, something Australia hasn’t always got right.

Which is why our CEO Nate Smith was recently invited onto Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia’s Climate Calling podcast to discuss Tellus’ approach to building our Sandy Ridge waste management facility and the role we can play in helping solving Australia’s radioactive waste challenge:

“It all starts with trust. For us that was sitting down over cups of tea or going to the pub, it was sharing our vision of what we wanted to do and really understanding the community’s perspective but also their aspirations, and I think one of the biggest things we did that was in stark contrast to government is, look, we gave our Traditional Owners a veto right. For us, the whole concept from the start was, this is their land.”
