A big milestone for Tellus.
The development of Cell 2 at our Sandy Ridge Facility is well underway – a major expansion of Australia’s long-term hazardous waste isolation capacity.
Tellus exists to help Australia safely manage the hazardous legacy of modern industry and enable the transition to a cleaner, circular and low-carbon economy. That means providing permanent, world-class solutions for waste that cannot be recycled, treated or safely stored above ground long-term.
Cell 2 will safely isolate around 350,000 tonnes of hazardous and low-level radioactive waste, strengthening Australia’s sovereign environmental infrastructure and supporting the industries driving the energy transition.
Sandy Ridge is licensed to accept a wide range of materials including certain cross-contaminated soils like PFAS, mercury, cyanide, asbestos, hydrocarbons, low-level radioactive waste and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) – materials generated by sectors such as resources, energy, manufacturing, defence and healthcare.
At the centre of the project will be the largest air dome in the Southern Hemisphere (95m x 250m), enabling all operations to occur in a controlled, engineered environment.
The project – delivered with Austral Construction – is expected to be completed and approved by late 2026, marking the largest construction program at Sandy Ridge since the facility first opened.
With our partners, we are proud to be building world-class infrastructure that protects the environment for generations.
